We had an interesting discovery this week; My 10 year old son has celiac. Since I have coached many clients with celiac or who have children with a celiac diagnosis, I feel all too aware of the challenges my family is going to face. I know I am blessed to have more tools and knowledge at my disposal then the average mom who gets the diagnosis, but even for me, the best medicine was the community of likeminded women who supported me and encouraged me when I found out.
The reason that I believe our primary food is not the food we eat, but the relationships we cultivate and the balance we find in our lives, is because no matter how much gluten free food I already had in my cupboards, the real food I needed were the words of love and encouragement that I received. The support and compassion my other children immediately showed by insisting that most of the food in the house be gluten free so that their brother would not feel left out, was better then any immediate gluten free treat. The secondary food, the quinoa, brown rice, tofu and vegetables, organic chicken and kale, feed and sustain our bodies, but the body is only a vessel for the soul.
Primary food is the food of the soul. I am going to share with you again my primary food wheel, which I use every few months to check up on how I am balancing my life. Even better than a food diary, is a primary food check in, because when our primary food is full of love, security and intellectual challenge, then we feel motivated, energized and excited to master the healthy food that will sustain our happiness. I am going to share a great link to my gluten free almond cookie recipe and let you know that there will be many more gluten free recipes to come. I hope that this week, you find a way to reach out to your community to increase the balance and love in your life and, it wouldn’t hurt to eat a salad.
