You’ve likely tried to eat healthier, move more, or “just be more disciplined.”But if you’ve ever felt like your thoughts were sabotaging your progress—this post is for you.
We don’t fail to lose weight because we’re lazy or unmotivated. We struggle because our minds are wired to keep us safe, not successful.
In Chapter 3 of The Happiness Trap, we learn a critical distinction:
🧠 “You are not your thoughts.”
And when it comes to weight loss, that truth can set you free.
🧠 The Neuroscience of Thought Loops
The average brain has over 80,000 thoughts per day. Many of them are repetitive, self-critical, and fear-based.
When you hear yourself think:
“This will never work.”
“I’m not the type of person who follows through.”
“I already messed up this week.”
You’re not hearing truth—you’re hearing habitual thought patterns.
Neuroscience shows that simply labeling a thought activates the prefrontal cortex, which helps you regulate emotion and interrupt cravings (Lieberman, UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center). This is a huge shift.
Instead of fighting yourself, you observe, label, and release.
💡 This Is Called “Defusion”
In The Happiness Trap, defusion is the skill of separating from your thoughts.
It’s the difference between:
“I’m a failure.”versus
“I’m noticing the thought that I’m a failure.”
That one small shift reduces emotional reactivity, binge eating triggers, and decision fatigue.
It gives you the power to choose action from your values, not your fear.
🧭 Values > Willpower
Let’s say you’re tired, craving chocolate, and your inner critic starts up:"You always ruin it. Just eat already."
Instead of fighting back or giving in, you pause—and ask:
“What choice aligns with the woman I want to become?”
When your choices are values-driven (not willpower-driven), your brain creates new identity pathways. That’s how long-term change actually happens.
🌱 This is What We Do Inside Thrive 2025
In Thrive 2025, we guide women to:
Understand their thoughts without becoming them
Create pause-and-breathe rituals to regulate emotion
Reconnect with their highest values through food choices
Build sustainable wellness—rooted in Jewish wisdom and neuroscience
We don’t “willpower” our way through diets. We retrain our brains to support the weight loss, confidence, and calm we deeply desire.
